Patrick Tito takes over as acting Deputy IG as Lagat steps aside amid probe into Albert Ojwang's murder

Lagat stepped aside on Monday, days after Albert Ojwang died at a police station on June 7, saying the move would allow for independent investigations into the matter.

Patrick Tito has taken over as acting Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police following the decision by Eliud Lagat to step aside after the death of a man in police custody.

Lagat stepped aside on Monday, days after Albert Ojwang died at a police station on June 7, saying the move would allow for independent investigations into the matter.

“In the good and conscious thought of my role and responsibilities as the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service, and in view of the ongoing investigations on the unfortunate incident of the death of Albert Ojwang, I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General – Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations,” Lagat said in a statement.

“The functions of the office will henceforth be performed by my deputy until completion of the investigations,” he added.

Tito, who has served as the Principal Assistant to the Deputy IG since March 2025, will now take charge in an acting capacity.

He previously served as the Nyanza Regional Police Commander before his transfer to Vigilance House in Nairobi.

His appointment as Principal Assistant followed the retirement of Miriam Muli in February this year.

Tito is no stranger to the inner workings of the Deputy IG’s office, having held the same position under former police chiefs Maj Gen (Rtd) Hussein Ali, Mathew Iteere, David Kimaiyo and Joseph Boinnet.

After his earlier stints at the top, he was moved to the diplomatic police unit, railways, and later posted to Nyanza, where he served for nearly a year before returning to headquarters.

The leadership changes come amid ongoing reforms within the service, including a recent promotion of more than 700 officers across various police units by the National Police Service Commission.

As Principal Assistant, Tito has been a key figure in shaping police operations and advising the Deputy IG on various matters.

With his vast experience and knowledge of the office, he now takes over familiar ground at a critical moment for the police service.
